The Concept of Tajweed and Its Historical Origins
Linguistically, Tajweed means improvement and refinement. Technically, it is defined as giving every letter its due right (Makhraj) and its deserved qualities (Sifah). Practically, the science began when the Prophet ﷺ received the revelation from Angel Gabriel and taught it to his Companions. Historically, the rules were codified by early scholars of language and recitation, such as Al-Khalil bin Ahmad Al-Farahidi and Abu Ubaid Al-Qasim bin Salam, transforming it into an independent academic discipline.
"Applying Tajweed is an absolute obligation; whoever does not beautify the Quran is sinful, because it was revealed by Allah in this manner, and thus it reached us." — Imam Ibn al-Jazari
